Kapelstraat 50, Utrecht
Renovation and extension phase A
Completed, 2002
The extension and renovation of this the historic workers house in a quite street in Utrecht near the Grift park, allowed the family to increase their living space while remaining in their community with close proximity to the center of town. The extension lifted the west facing sloped roof plane of the previously unused attic above the existing roof peak, allowing a gracious ceiling height and a row of clearstory windows letting light and air in from the east into the new master bedroom and stairway. While the street façade and roofline was kept intact in the row of historic workers housing, the garden side was totally transformed, with a new raised roof and patio façade. To create additional space for the bathroom, an angled wall clad in western red cedar fanned out towards the south creating space for windows with a view of the Dom Toren over the inner gardens, above which a small smokers terrace with sliding glass door to the master bedroom allowing an opportunity to step outside without having to descend the two flights of stairs.
